Now I am not taking The Lord’s name in vain, not this time at least. I mean it literally, we should thank God for nutters, they are bread and butter for satire bloggers like me.
Especially the Bishop of Carlisle in the week of Biblical(ish) floods.
As the rain continues to fall, the Rt. Rev. Graham Dow has explained what is going on. It is nothing to do with global warming as scientists would have us believe, nor even with the El Nino / La Nina cycle in the central Pacific ocean which is known to disrupt the jetstreams that affect our weather. No, it is all down to “a strong and definitive judgement on the permissiveness and moral degeneration of society.” So its the fault of Graham norton and Amy Winehouse then.
But wait, let’s get this in perspective. The flood is hardly global, in fact it does not even affect the whole of Yorkshire. It is highly localised. Is the Reverend gentleman suggesting the inhabitants of Sheffield and Doncaster are naughtier than the rest of us?
Sensibly, seven people had died which is tragic for families and friends and saddening for the rest of us. About thitry thousand homes have been ruined but most of the homeowners will show typical human resilience in putting their lives back together and carrying on. So the main victims will be the insurance companies, they will face claims totalling billions of pounds.
This being the case, the Bishop’s “strong and definitive judgement” would have to be a response to the pension, endownent mortgage and investment misselling of the eighties and nineties. Maybe there is a God after all.
P>S Last week Irish-le-feaux said I could not blame Maggie Thatcher for everything. Now I seem to remember Irish that you are a man who likes an occasional wager, so how much do you want to bet. After all, who was responsible for the deregulation that facilitated all that mis-selling.
Game, set and match?
