Andrew Looks For A Nancy

I have not been going on very well for a while now so the new Andrew Lloyd Webber TV showbiz talent thing has only dawned on me gradullay.

In the same way he found his Maria for The Sound of Music and his Joseph for Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat Lord Andy L-W is now getting a lot of pre publicity for a new production of Oliver by holding a televised elimination contest to find a Nancy for the production.

But with Graham Norton and John Barrowman involved in the TV series aren't there already more than enough Nancys?

Did you hear Kevin Spacey's complaints about how Andrew L-W's shows on BBC1 were basically 13 weeks of advertising?

I heard of them - and its true.

But anything that puts bums on seats can't be bad. When working in London I used know a guy named Paddy Wilson, a theatre producer, we talked about how TV could boost theatre attendance by having a weekly show featuring new opening, actors profiles, provincial and fringe theatres.

Talking of the web being "interactive" because we can make a few choices with mouse clicks is bollocks. There is nothing more interactive than live theatre, you have to suspend disbelive, create in your mind a world beyond the stage, a three dimensional world the actors inhabit, and you have to get really physical to get to the bar in the interval :-)

TV should support theatre more, they they would benefite from better scripts coming in.
