Poor Nick Clegg, you can imagine him sitting in his office singing miserableist dirges by Travis as he struggles (and fails) to get a grip on the task of being the charismatic young leader who will carry the Liberal Democrats to a stunning election victory in 2010. It’s just not going to happen and you get the feeling Nick knows this as events conspire to make him appear as unsuited to the role as Gordon Broon is to his.
Yesterday the Liberal Democrats launched a document that sets out their path to the election. It is full of crypto – Obama-isms, “Yes we think we might be able to”, “the audacity of incompetence”, and “a post post-office society among them.”
The pamphlet is glossy, has lots of pictures and says ……well hardly anything actually.
but among all the PR bullshit the Lib Dems penchant for shooting themselves in the foot manages to surface.
A headline which aims to echo the plaintive cry of the common man, “Why does the Government ignore me?” might have resonated with the public consciousness had some PR genius not placed it next to a picture of Clegg.
You can imagine young Nick, on seeing the document for the first time only hours before publication heaving a sigh and saying “Bugger” like Unlucky Alf from television's The Fast Show.
