There is a campaign going on at the moment to persuade more young women to take up some sporting activity. The theme of the adverts and press releases emphasises the beneficial effects of physical activity to health and physical appearance. Looking and feeling better also boosts self – esteen and confidence bof course so the message is clear, sport is A GOOD THING. The effort is being run by The Sports Council so I suppose they would say that wouldn’t they?
What a pity then that one of the most popular sports for young women, equestrianism, is running a concurrent but unrelated campaign which has two leading female showjumpers stipped down to their knickers for a photoshoot.
(“Girls running round with no clothes on…”)
Well it’s one way to show that horsey girls are good sports and game for a laugh. According to the spokesperson of the British Showjumping Association the aim of the campaign is to rid the sport of its stuffy and snobbish image” which, they say, is inaccurate.
Well sorry showjumpers but there is a lot of stuffiness and snobberey attached to the sport. Being a snob and a bit of a slapper are not mutually exclusive conditions though. And it has never been difficult to get the knickers off a middle class girl who spends a lot of time around horses. Trust me, I speak from experience.
So the Show Jumping Association seem to be sending out a conflicting message that sets them on collision course with the other lot.
( “aah – aah –aah. I predict a riot.”)
See, the posh lot are not that much different to chavs.
