As Parliament debated the financial crisis and the meltdown in global stock markets yesterday; as Lib Dem Financial Affairs spokesman Vince Cable again showed himself to be the only sane politician in the world, the only positive suggestion regarding what may be done to resolve the situation came from an unexpected source. The most senior member of the House both in age and years service seldom sullies himself by speaking on matters of a financial nature. To speak of filthy lucre is perhaps beneath his dignity.
It is perhaps a measure of the seriousness of the situation therefore that yesterday this doyen with the voice if not the beard of an Old Testament prophet rose ponderously to his feet and proclaimed: “ Oy trost the whoyle noytion woll torn in repontonce and orsk Gord toy ontervene soy thot colomity woll not come doyn on our choldren and the babes in thor cots.”
