Not long ago we were happy to report that Bruce Dickinson, the frontman of Heavy Metal rockers Iron Maiden had piloted a plan that flew to rescue holiday makers stranded in Spain after their a company had collapsed.
Now we learn that Iron Maiden are once more involved in Iberan heroics as the bands ghoulish logo Eddie The Head has become a champion of Spanish Unity. The Cartoon Cadaver has been adopted by the Socialsts on the town council in Villava, Navarra.
When Basque separatists on the town council began to drape their desks with the flag of the Basque independence movement the socialists retaliated by unfurling the Iron Maiden flag featuring Eddie at his most repulsive.
Though Eddie, a rather jolly looking rotting corpse might seem an unlikely symbol of Spanish unity we must remember that El Cid was dead when he led his army to their greatest victory. Eddie of course has never actually been alive which is a way is going one better.
Asked by a Boggart Blog reporter why the Villava socialists identified with a heavy metal band a spokesman said:
Si, Iron Maidens are always being very popular in Spain. Perhaps they are reminding people of The Inquisition.
Iron Maiden Eddie appears in Spanish Town Hall Story and picture in The Daily Telegraph.
