Barack Obama described his administration as “not a speedboat but an ocean liner. In an open thread The Guardian asked what readers might come up with to summarise Gordon Brown’s Britain.
To sustain the nautical metaphore I tried to think of a ship that represented Gordon Browns Britain.
All that would come to mind was:
Dirty British coaster with a salt caked smoke stack.

Sir, whatever John Masefield says that other ships might have on board, the British coasters are always unsurpassable because they have the most imposing figureheads, those nice ornamental carvings of women with two large, uncovered protrusions – thus British mariners enthusiasm to get ahead (no matter what) will always surpass the enthusiasm of any other sailing nation. What is a cargo of diamonds compared with that, I ask. Diamonds can dazzle the sailors and therefore a hindrance to navigation.
