The first time I saw Seasick Steve was about six or seven years ago at a small gig in Lancashire. I was fascinated to see him playing a three string guitar.
Over the weekend I saw him on television playing a one string guitar.
I guess ol' Steve has been hit hard by the recession.

The first person I ever saw with that kind of instrument was Stringybark McDowell who I booked on my son's recoomendation for a gig a few years ago. As well as a cigar box guitar Stringy had the on string verion referred to in American folk circles as a Diddley Box but being Australian Stringy called his a Diddleydoo.
He also had another homemade guitar he called the Fencepanelcaster.
My son has a cigar box guitar, they're THE thing at the moment.
I guess musical instruments are constantly evolving. I know a young lady who plays the saxophone in a trad. type dance band. When the leader awards her a solo piece then the hips start to swing into what I might describe as sexyphone playing but I don't suppose she would ever admit it.

Yes I saw him recently as well on some TV programme. His instrument was derived from a cigar box I think. since he is the sort of chap I imagine playing in bars, then perhaps the pub smoking ban may have hit him.
On the other hand I had imagined him as more of a 'chaw and spit' sort of guy so that would be OK wouldn't it?.
