Trees For SPAM

You may have been under the impression that goal of the Copenhagen Climate Summit in December is to agree a binding treaty to fight global warming, I know I certainly was. We have been misled however. According to leaders of a militant environmentalist organisation the summit is about civil disobedience, old bikes and unwanted trees.

The civil disobedience will probably consist of the usual uncivil shanting, placard waving and stone throwing and the old bikes will be used to make "artworks" that will block roads and annot fossil fuel lobbyists by imprisoning them in their five star hotels while the conference is on. Perhaps the militant environMENTALISTS have not thought that one through as well as they might.

It is the trees that intrigue us though. The militant environmentalists want us to take "unwanted trees" to Copenhagen. Why? Is it a way of paying back the Danes for all those lovely SPAM they sent us?

(Cue song) Anybosy who has ever enjoyed a hearty meal of SPAM, SPAM, SPAM, egg, beans and SPAM woild approve of that.

It is not so however. The reason you should take your unwanted trees to Copenhagen is to protest against climate change. yeah well, um ... but? Take unwanted tress to Denmark to protest about climate change, what's all that about?

With airport security and travel safety being what it is these days I dread to think of the kerfuffle that would ensue if I turned up at the Airport with the thirty year old willow tree that blocks the midday sun from my garden in early and late summer. Anyone trying to get a 500 year old Oak Tree through the customs could start an international incident.

Copenhagen is just another pat the back exercise where everyone will pretend to do something and do nothing. Except China who fair enough are making the effort and you gotta respect that especially as america seem unlikely to other than their "cash for clunkers" scheme that lasted about 5 minutes and was stolen from Sarkozy anyway.

Militant environmentalists are funny- they would literally take all resources and tax revenue which goes towards healthcare, the welfare state, policing, etc and put it all into fighting climate change- talk about single minded and I have talked to many and that is what they would do.

Shouldnt they be taking their trees to the rainforests not to copenhagen?

  I've noticed a nasty quasi religious element creping into the climate change question. Everyone should be entitled to their opinion but more and more often I hear the environment lobby talking about cliate change denial being made a crime like holocaust denial.

    I have not heard that comparsion but certainly it seemed inevitable. It is a disgusting thing to do as well- there should be no attempt of association because it belittles the holocaust and secondly they become as bad as scientologists who seem to be highjacking the holocaust as their own struggle as we speak.
    
    I believe in Climate Change but these people are going too far- grouping every arguement, of varying extremes that does not agree with their own, as climate deniers which just means the environmentalists are more closed minded than anyone else.
    
    People like The Guardian's George Monbiot is trying to create a climate change denier witchhunt which will only stop progress I think rather than enhance it.

Quick thinking city officials in Stockholm are using the cadavers of culled rabbits as heating fuel.

Every year contractors are employed in and around Stockholm to shoot thousands and thousands of wild rabbits which live in the area. The yearly cull bagged 6,000 bunnies last year and this year the total has already hit 3,000.

This year one bright spark came up with the idea of burning all the rabbits to provide heat for Stockholm’s citizens during these cold winter months. The practice has enraged animal rights supporters, who would rather not see the harmless bunnies shot at all.

  Yeah, those harmless littlle bunnies with their cute fluffy tails and long floppy ears. Never picnic under a tree in a Stockholm park without checking for bunny excavations round the roots first.

  I think this is from somewhere in America, but interestingly it could be the Antipodes.
  Animal rights campaigners have successfully forced the cancellation of the annual throwing a dead bunny contest for children.
  This event usually takes place before the annual pig hunt, a good all round family affair. In the run up to the hunt the children queue up to see who can throw a dead bunny the furthest.
