  Well if they'd stop saying "science" which is a nasty, slippery, slithery word, all sibilants and soft vowels that slide through your fingers like eel slime, we would get it. We like good befy British words like Fizzicks which sounds like fuses fizzing which makes us think of bombs which takes us to Chemistry.
  
  It's sociology and psychology and those kind of bogus sciences we don't get, they're just unBritish.
  
  BTW before you say anything I studied sociology and in 40 years it's been eff all use for anything.

  I have two daughters who are both addicted to horses. They are no longer teenagers and have been known to, as we say up here, take drink. As both activities are legal we are willing, as a family to accept the risks. I think we did know that both activities have inherent dangers without needing the advice of the Nutty Professor [ sorry professor, for your name you must blame your ancestors]
  
  The important point in all this furore seems to me to relate to the fact that the professor is an expert on Psychopharmacology. He knows the physiological effect of drugs and to some extent he knows the motivation of drug takers but that is all.
  
  Unfortunately he has, like many researchers before him, placed himself at the mercy of the statisticians. Statistics is a very complex science and I do not claim any deep knowledge of its minutiae but when he started comparing apples [horse riding] and pears [Ecstasy] I felt my mind glaze over.
  
  Much as it pains me, I can do nought but support the government minister; who has much more to consider than ‘probabilities’ and ‘standard deviations’. He’s got a country to run and if he gets it wrong we’ll chuck him out. Why don’t you go off and argue your case with your peers. I have a suspicion that they don’t all agree with you?

    I think you've identified the main point here and show a deep understanding of the nature of drug use and abuse (as well as providing a more intelligent response than this post deserved, thanks for that)
    
    While I lean to Prof Nutt's view, scientific opinion is very divided on this issue. I've smoked cannabis years ago with no apparent ill effects as yet but I know people who have very qickly become obsessed if not actually addicted. It very much depends on the individual. And individuals are not an ideal subject for science or statistics.

  A drug is always harmful, whether taken in any of the form. Lesser or higher ill effects is not the issue, issue here is all kind of drugs intake is harmful. We cannot defend any of it.

    Ah, one of the "ban everything that puts people at risk of enjoying themselves" brigade.
    
    Foods are dangerous if not consumed sensibly, coffee can harm the stomach and an excess of water can cause lethal kidney failure.
    
    And yet going without food and water will certainly kill us. You didn't really think through your reply did you?

  I agree there are many things, which harms us if not taken carefully. I like the example you have given Ianrthorpe, that even water can harm us if not taken properly, which is also life for us.
